Diversity Talk: The Story of a Real Civil Rights Foot Soldier

By Published On: October 4th, 20201 min read

Talk Description

Lowndes County was the site of two of the most violent acts of the Civil Rights Movement, regular lynchings, the murder of Mrs. Viola Liuzzo, who was transporting people who had participated in the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, and the murder of Jonathan Daniels who was participating in a protest to register black people to vote. Jake was involved in all of the Civil Rights mass meetings and protests that organized and registered Blacks to vote. His early years of involvement in the Civil Rights Movement has provided him with a unique perspective of the Civil rights Movement.

Speaker

Jake Williams was an actual participant in the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. He was raised in rural Lowndes County, just outside of Montgomery, Alabama at the height of the Civil Rights Movement.
